UNUSUAL EXTRA LARGE CODD BOTTLE WITH A MILITARY CONNECTION.
Most codd bottles are produced in a 6oz or 10oz size but this one is an extra large 16oz example which are scarce and unusual. This large aqua glass codd bottle is embossed, HEDGES, LONG CECIL, SMETHWICK. The reverse side has the glass makers details for Redfern brothers Barnsley. The bottle was produced to commemorate the end of the Boar war in South Africa, long Cecil was the name of a large field gun that was produced by the De Beers mining group in Kimbeley for use by the British military garrison to defend Kimberley against the attacking Boar forces. These extra large codds seem to mostly originate from the Birmingham area and were used by various company's and a number of them were produced as military commemoratives with embossing such as, long guns, peace beverage and obviously long Cecil. The condition of the bottle is mint and it has probably never been buried in a rubbish tip.

A very high quality small figural inkwell bottle produced in a most unusual turquoise coloured glass. The inkwell appears to be cut glass rather than molded, the obverse and reverse side's feature a chequered design, the end's depict a flower or sun burst design. Slight flaw to the very top of the lip but it is very minor and possibly a manufacturing fault, please see photographs.
